Susan Burnstine’s photography explores the fleeting moments and subconscious realities between waking and dreaming. Burnstine portrays these “dream-like visions…entirely in-camera, rather than with post-processing manipulations”. To do so, she uses one of 21 film cameras and lenses she handcrafted using plastic, vintage camera parts and random household objects such as trash bags, rubber and tape. Technically challenging and often unpredictable, these cameras produce soft “dream-like” imagery that resonates with the viewer.
Susan Burnstine has exhibited extensively throughout the United States and abroad. She was nominated for the Santa Fe Prize for Photography in 2009 and awarded B&W Magazine’s Portfolio Spotlight Award in 2008. Her work is featured in the upcoming book highlighting the top 50 working photographers in the world in Why Photographers Work by George Barr.
