Washington, DC, b. South Africa
Rosemary Feit Covey’s artwork is created using the technique of woodcut, specifically wood-engraving, a technique dating back to the Middle Ages. In wood engraving unlike a woodcut, the gravers (tool used for wood engravings) are not gouges but rather knives; the wood is hard – not soft as in woodcut. After the painstaking engraving is complete, the inked block is impressed on a piece of paper using a specially designed press. For her engravings, Covey uses a Vandercook, a relic from the 1920’s used for proofing at the Bureau of Engraving in Washington, DC.
Rosemary Feit Covey was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. In a career spanning three decades she has exhibited internationally and received countless awards. Covey’s work is in numerous national and international museum and library collections.
