Maya Freelon Asante (tissue paper sculpture, tissue ink monoprints; Baltimore, b. USA): Initially
inspired by intricate stains transferred from wet tissue paper discovered in her grandmother’s
house, Asante creates dramatic sculptures and monoprints from “bleeding” tissue paper. Each
sheet of tissue paper speaks to her memory of existence and resilience and mirrors her familial
quilt-making heritage and the tradition of preservation and resourcefulness.
